Argentinian football idol Lionel Messi spoke about his "great pride" in having worn the Albiceleste shirt "for over 20 years" following his last match for the national team on Tuesday, which ended with a final goal.
"It has been a great pride for me to defend this shirt," said the number 10 after his team's victory against Benin (3-0) during this farewell match before more than 80,000 spectators at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.
"I have nothing but thanks (...) Not coming back will be a great sorrow," said the 2022 world champion, who bids farewell to international football at the age of 39.
