Haitian electoral authorities announced the postponement of the initial stages of the electoral process, thus indefinitely delaying the presidential and legislative elections that were set to begin on December 13, in a country plagued by gang violence, it was learned on Tuesday from a statement.<\/p>
"The period initially set for the electoral campaign is postponed," states the statement from the provisional electoral council, removing any mention of the election date and adding that the electoral calendar "will be made public as soon as possible." The Haitian state has not experienced elections since 2016 and its last president, assassinated in 2021, has not been replaced.<\/p>
