The very powerful Hurricane Melissa is moving toward Cuba after severely striking Jamaica on Tuesday, which authorities have declared a “disaster zone,” where several infrastructures were destroyed and multiple areas flooded.
With sustained winds nearing 300 kilometers per hour, the hurricane—then a Category 5, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale—hit western Jamaica head-on at midday.
It is the worst hurricane to hit Jamaica since the beginning of meteorological record-keeping.
