The American Robert Francis Prevost, 69, became on Thursday the first pope from the United States in history, under the name Leo XIV, and appeared before a jubilant crowd in St. Peter's Square.
It was the "protodeacon" cardinal, the Frenchman Dominique Mamberti, who pronounced the famous phrase "Habemus papam" ("We have a pope") and introduced the successor to Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
