Haiti's Security Crisis: Surge in Prices of Vital Goods

Since the outbreak of violence orchestrated by armed gangs since February 29, 2024, a surge in prices has hit Haitian households hard. This situation jeopardizes the already precarious purchasing power of many families.

The metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince has been in turmoil since February 29, 2024. Armed gangs, operating under the label "viv ansanm," have spread terror in the streets, leading to the closure of schools, universities, and the paralysis of the commercial sector and public administration.

This situation has led to looting and the closure of many businesses. Consequently, in the few stores still open, as well as in the markets, prices of essential products have skyrocketed, reaching up to 20 percent for some items.
