A former Colombian soldier was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday in Miami for his involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

Mario Antonio Palacios, 45, had pleaded guilty in December before the federal court in Miami, after denying any role in the murder for months.

Jovenel Moïse was shot dead by an armed commando on the night of July 6-7, 2021, at his private residence in Port-au-Prince, without his bodyguards intervening. The commando was primarily composed of Colombian mercena
