Haitians Force Open Ouanaminthe Border Gate Despite Law Enforcement Presence

In the late afternoon of Thursday, December 14, 2023, Haitians coming from Dajabón (Dominican Republic) forcefully reopened the Haitian border barrier for the second time. The barrier had been closed for about three months by the Ouanaminthe community in protest of President Luis Abinader's administration's decision to suspend diplomatic relations with Haiti due to the construction of an irrigation canal.

In a surprising turn of events in Ouanaminthe on Thursday, Haitians, in the presence of Border Police (Polifront) agents responsible for monitoring Haiti's border, once again used force to reopen the Haitian side. Shortly afterward, they managed to lift and throw a portion of the barrier into the Massacre River.

Questioned after the incident, some Haitians present at the border did not mince their words in blaming the Haitian authorities for the situation. They threatened to rebel against any attempt to close the Haitian barrie
