Haitian-born Jean Baptiste Point du Sable is regarded as the first permanent resident of Chicago. Based on family recollections and tombstone inscriptions it is believed that Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was born in Saint-Marc in Haiti, studied in France. He is regarded as the first permanent resident of what became Chicago, Illinois. Point du Sable has become known as the "Founder of Chicago".
